The German car manufacturer Audi announced yesterday that it plans to close its factory electric cars of Brussels due to a “world crash” of the demand for these vehicles high-end.

The company, a subsidiary of Volkswagenindicated that it plans to “end production early” of its models SUV Q8 e-tron at the factory, which employs about 3,000 workers.

The Management is discussing “factory solutions” from Brussels, which “could also include a cessation of its activities “if no alternative is found,” the manufacturer added in a statement.

Audi alleged a “global decline in orders of customers in the luxury electric car sector” to justify this decision.

Having made massive investments in electric vehicles in recent years, manufacturers of cars were affected by the slowdown in demand in this sector.

Volkswagen – whose 10 brands also include Porsche, Seat and Skoda– said that closing the Brussels plant, or seeking other options instead, as well as other unforeseen costs, would have an impact of 2.6 billion euros ($2.8 billion) on the 2020 financial year. Audi also spoke of “long-standing structural challenges” at the Brussels plant, such as a difficult-to-change factory layout and high logistics costs.
