After his father’s death, Benjamin Braun founded the Yana cancer charity. The Augsburg resident now wants to collect donations with his story about ladybug Berni.

From one moment to the next everything was different. Benjamin Braun was actually looking forward to a nice birthday in September 2014. But on that very day his father Peter collapsed and had to be taken to hospital in an ambulance. Soon afterwards came the devastating diagnosis: cancer. Peter Braun fought against it with all his might for nine months and ultimately lost the battle. Some time later, Benjamin Braun founded the cancer charity “Yana” in memory of his father. He is now collecting donations with a children’s book he wrote himself.

Yana, that stands for “You are not alone – you are not alone.” The 40-year-old from Augsburg wants his organization to educate people about the disease and collect donations. Especially for children with cancer. Braun can still remember picking up his wife and their newborn daughter from the Augsburg University Hospital. The children’s cancer center is right next to the mother-child center. “An affected child came towards us in a wheelchair. That was depressing.”

Children’s book by an Augsburg resident: On a treasure hunt with ladybug Berni

The personal trainer and operator of a security company has always written; he is also active as a copywriter and blogger, as he explains. For his children Melina-Emilia, Samira and Danny, the father of the family came up with an adventurous story about the ladybug Berni in order to provide a little variety to their nightly bedtime story. In it, Berni and his friends set out to search for the legendary treasure at the end of the magical rainbow.

To raise funds for cancer relief, Braun decided to self-publish the book with illustrations by Cristian Mulcuta. “As high as the rocket flies! The Search for the Golden Chest” can be ordered from booksellers or online. “All proceeds from the book go entirely to cancer aid,” says Braun. Together with his mother and children, he handed over some books and a donation of 1,000 euros to Lichtblicke in memory of his late father in the summer. Now he hopes for many young readers who want to go on a treasure hunt with Berni and his friends and do good at the same time.
