August of this year in Latvia became the coldest since 2021, when the average monthly temperature was only +16 degrees.

The lowest temperature was +6.3 degrees on August 27 in Mersrag, while the maximum temperature was +32.0 degrees on August 25 at the Jelgava observation station. At the end of the month, 25 heat records were broken.

The average amount of precipitation last month in Latvia was 58.6 millimeters or 76% of the norm, which is the lowest amount of precipitation in August since 2020.

It rained the most in Zoseni, where the amount of monthly precipitation reached 105.5 millimeters, while the smallest amount of precipitation – 23 millimeters – was recorded in Rucava. The indicator of dryness and humidity in most observation stations in August was within normal limits, the weather was very dry in Rucava, but very wet in Gulbene and Zosēni.

The average relative humidity was 79% – from 73% in Riga to 83% in Alūksne. The strongest wind gusts – 19.6 meters per second – were observed on August 25 in Zvejniekciem.

The duration of sunshine was higher than the norm, in part of Kurzeme it reached 140% of the 1991-2020 average.
