By its title as well as by its content, the petition launched on July 10 on the change.org website to say “no to the installation of Atacadão in Aulnay-sous-Bois” is largely inspired by the initiative of the City of Sevran. Last March, the left-wing elected representatives of this popular commune of Seine-Saint-Denis, in the forefront of which mayor Stéphane Blanchet (DVG), had collected hundreds of signatures before pushing back the Carrefour group, which planned to set up its Brazilian subsidiary in the Beau Sevran shopping center.

The text signed by Mehdi Chtioui, one of the parliamentary collaborators of the deputy for Aulnay Nadège Abomangoli (LFI), has the same objective, but it seems more difficult to achieve. Because if the town hall of Sevran and the deputy Clémentine Autain (LFI) have weighed with all their weight so that the French giant of the large distribution gives up its project, the mayor of Aulnay Bruno Beschizza (LR) salutes the will of the latter to invest some 10 million euros in the transformation of the Carrefour hypermarket in the O’Parinor shopping centre.

The municipality boasts “an alternative and contemporary solution to the declining model of hypermarkets”

The petition launched in the name of the “political forces of the left, employees and inhabitants” of Aulnay relays the fears linked to the arrival of Atacadão: “jobs at Carrefour O’Parinor threatened”, “deteriorated working conditions and lower-paid employees”, “a greatly degraded quality and diversity of the product offer”, “sale in large quantities which penalizes consumers who do not travel by car but by bus” and “local shops threatened by this unfair competition.

The subject was invited on July 12 to the last meeting of the municipal council, during which Oussouf Siby (PS) estimated that the municipality “rolled out the red carpet” at the Brazilian sign. “It’s not true,” replies Daouda Sanogo. Bruno Beschizza’s deputy nevertheless evokes “an alternative and contemporary solution to the declining model of hypermarkets” and underlines that Atacadão will adapt “to the specific catchment area of Aulnay, a town which has managed to preserve a rich commercial fabric and which has a diversity of sociology unlike Sevran”.
