Myanmar court has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison.
Aung San Suu Kyi’s party won a landslide victory in Myanmar’s general election late last year. But Aung San Suu Kyi’s government was overthrown by the country’s military on February 1 last year, citing election fraud. Following this, the Myanmar people refused to accept the military rule and took to the streets to protest. The army placed several people under house arrest, including Aung San Suu Kyi. MPs and party representatives were jailed.
Following this, Aung San Suu Kyi was charged with several counts of illegally purchasing a walkie-talkie during the election, treason, breach of secret law, illegally obtaining gold, and violating the National Period of Management Act by failing to comply with corona control regulations.
A Myanmar court has sentenced 76-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment under Section 505 (b) and two years imprisonment under the Natural Disaster Act. Aung San Suu Kyi, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, has already spent more than 21 years in prison for fighting for Myanmar’s liberation.
