Forever the first. Aurélie Aubert has made history in French boccia by winning the gold medal in the BC1 category on Monday, September 2. Accompanied by her game assistant, Claudine Llop Cliville, the vice-champion of France managed to rise to the level of her opponent, Yee Ting Jeralyn Tan, who was the favorite in the match. “I don’t know if we realize it, I just beat the second in the world, I am 16th, this is huge for me and for Claudine!” said the newly crowned Paralympic champion after her victory. “I had confidence in myself, a year ago I wouldn’t have played like this, I wouldn’t have spoken into the microphone, now I enjoy it.” By winning the first two sets decisively, the Frenchwoman gave herself some breathing room, leading 5-0 at the halfway point of the match. Despite a strong third set from her opponent, she managed to maintain her lead and won 5 to 4.

Having been defeated by the Singaporean (6-1) in the group stage, the native of Dreux succeeded in taking her revenge. In her first Paralympics, Aurélie Aubert can rejoice in having had a remarkable journey, with closely contested matches. “I’m offering the first gold medal to France in boccia, I hope this will receive more media attention and that it doesn’t stop here in Paris.” Until now, no French athlete had managed to win a medal since the introduction of the discipline into the Paralympic program in 1984.
