Anyone who has seen it with their own eyes also knows about the cold feet that can arise from the often endless waiting. In order to see the green-turquoise veils of light that drift into blue or sometimes even pink, you have to have not only warm clothing but also luck on your side.
Attention, aurora alarm
The requirements include not only a location in the far north, a winter night, but also cloud-free nights. It is important to constantly keep an eye on the sky in order to sound the “aurora alarm” if necessary.
The Latin term “Aurora borealis” stands for the Northern Lights, a phenomenon that occurs in the polar regions in the upper layers of the Earth’s atmosphere. Northern lights can be observed in the Scandinavian countries, Siberia, Canada and Alaska, particularly in late autumn and early winter, but also into spring.
Auroras occur when electrically charged particles from the solar wind hit the upper layers of the Earth’s atmosphere. There they particularly stimulate oxygen and nitrogen molecules to glow. The phenomenon occurs particularly in the polar regions.
