Australia on Tuesday accused China of “unacceptable” behavior in international airspace, accusing a Chinese warplane of launching flares into the path of an Australian Navy helicopter over international waters.

The Australian Department of Defense explained that “the events occurred on May 4 while the helicopter was flying over the Yellow Sea on a monitoring mission to ensure that North Korea was implementing sanctions imposed on it by the United Nations.”

The helicopter quickly intercepted a Chinese military aircraft by firing flares on its path, putting it in danger.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “We have made clear to China that this is unprofessional and unacceptable, and that Australians are awaiting an explanation for what happened.”

Albanese noted that Canberra had raised its concerns to Beijing through diplomatic and military channels, but had not yet received a response.
