The Australian Davis Cup team beat the Czech Republic (2-1) this Wednesday to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament which is being decided in the Final 8 in Malaga, an epic comeback that Álex de Miñaur allowed and completed the doubles point.
De Minaur’s 4-6, 7-5(2), 7-5 victory over Jiri Lehecka saved last year’s runner-up from elimination. Australia, seeking to win the Davis Cup again just 20 years laterbegan the tie with Jordan Thompson’s defeat against Tomas Machac 6-4, 7-5, but his number one came to the rescue.
De Miñaur, whose mother is Spanish, had winked at Martín Carpena’s fans in the preview so, in the absence of Spain again, he would have the support of the stands like a year ago. The Australian had it in him to come back from a match that seemed lost when Lehecka served to send the Czech Republic to the semi-finals.
The number one ‘Aussie’ ended the Czech streak, 10 victories in 10 Davis Cup matches in 2023, and forced a doubles in which Lleyton Hewitt’s men clearly became favorites. Lehecka barely had a break and was paired with Adam Pavlasek, beaten in two sets (6-4 and 7-5) by Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell.
The 28-time champion thus ended a long day that began at the bottom against Jaroslav Navratil’s side, who led his country to consecutive titles in 2012 and 2013. Thompson’s desperation, greatly surpassed by Machacgave way to the epic of De Minaur and a solid sentence in the doubles where Australia met in the semifinals with Finland, which surprised Canada on Tuesday.
