Australia recognizes Sputnik V to confirm vaccinated status

by time news

The Australian Therapeutic Goods Authority has recognized the Russian two-component Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine to confirm vaccinated status for travelers, the regulator’s website says.

The report said that last week the agency received additional information that confirms the effectiveness of the drug, reducing the risk of the spread of coronavirus and the development of a severe course of COVID-19. According to the developer, the effectiveness of “Sputnik V” against the onset of symptoms of the disease is 89%, against hospitalization and death – 98-100%. The regulator noted that these data were obtained before the emergence of the Omicron strain.

The Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine has not yet been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the EU medical regulator. In December, the head of the WHO Regional Office for Europe, Hans Kluge, suggested that the Russian vaccine could be approved by WHO in the first quarter of next year, after receiving a dossier on the drug. On December 14, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged that the country had not yet handed over to the WHO some of the information needed to register Sputnik V. This happened due to different standards, but Russia is gradually adapting to the requirements of foreign regulators, he explained.
