A relevant federal law will be adopted later this year, Albanīz said, noting that the so-called social media have a devastating effect on children and young people.

The minimum age at which children could be allowed to register on sites such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok is still being debated, but is expected to be between 14 and 16.

Albanīz himself has repeatedly stated in interviews that he would prefer a ban until the age of 16.

The verification of the age verification system will be carried out in the coming months before the adoption of the law, which is expected at the end of the year.

“I want to see children not in front of their devices, but in sports fields and swimming pools and tennis courts,” said the Prime Minister, who represents Labor.

“We want them to have real experiences with real people because we know that social media causes social harm,” the head of government added in an interview with public broadcaster ABC.
