Australia won the International Wheelchair Rugby Cup on Sunday at the Accor Arena in Bercy by beating Canada (53-48), at the end of a final day where the French team lost during the small final against Japan.
The Australians, carried by their impressive No.3 Ryley Batt, took their revenge at the best of times on the Canadians, who had beaten them in the group stage at the start of the tournament (49-48).
The Australian wheelchair rugby team, 2nd nation in the world, was notably crowned Paralympic champion in 2012 (London) and 2016 (Rio), and world champion in 2022 and 2014. The Blues, eliminated the day before in the semi-finals by Canada , lost the small final a little earlier in the afternoon, won narrowly by Japan by one point (50-49).
The French team won with an identical score against the same Japanese team in the group stage to reach the last four. Organized for the first time in parallel with the Rugby World Cup, the International Wheelchair Rugby Cup served as a major rehearsal before the Paralympic Games in Paris next year (August 28-September 8).
