The Australian government’s new rules will limit the number of visas issued to international students and low-skilled workers.
However, special visa arrangements have been made to provide skilled workers with the opportunity to settle permanently in Australia, considering the skilled and service minded to be ‘essential’.
Therefore, there are few mechanisms for skilled migrant workers to settle permanently in Australia.
Any employer based in Australia can nominate skilled workers for permanent residence. In addition, migrants can apply for permanent residence in Australia under the ‘Global Talent Visa’ scheme.
However, it is important to note that you will not be granted Australian citizenship by being granted permanent residency.
A person must have lived there for at least four years before applying for Australian citizenship. In addition, migrants must not have been outside Australia for more than one year in each of these four years. Also, must not have been outside Australia for more than 90 days in a year.
The application fee for permanent residence also differs for different visas.
An Australian-based employer must pay an application fee of AUD 4,640 (about INR 2.5 lakh) to obtain permanent residence for a highly skilled migrant. The visa application fee for expatriates applying under the ‘Global Talent Visa’ scheme is 4,710 Australian dollars (about 2.6 lakh Indian rupees).

Who can settle permanently in Australia?
If an immigrant is recommended to settle permanently by an Australian employer or company, he must apply for a visa within six months. Also, the immigrant must start working there within six months of receiving the visa. Must work for at least two years.
Generally, a person applying for an immigrant visa must be under 45 years of age. However, this does not apply to migrants nominated by Australian universities or government scientific institutions.
An immigrant applying for permanent residency must be proficient in the English language. Candidate should have three years work experience in his field of work. In addition, the applicant must be registered as a member of a professional body in accordance with the regulations of the territory of the country in which he wishes to work.
If an immigrant’s family member over 18 years of age applies for a permanent resident visa, they must pay 4,890 Australian dollars (2.6 lakh Indian rupees). Apart from this, they have to pay the costs of their medical test, police certificate and biometrics.
Prashant Ajmera, immigration lawyer and founder of Ajmera Law Group, said, “The maximum age for obtaining a permanent immigrant visa in Australia is 45. The maximum age for obtaining a permanent resident visa in Canada is 35 years.”
“Thus, if a person cannot get a permanent residence visa in Canada due to age, they have a chance to get permanent residence in Australia. Most Australian companies usually employ highly skilled immigrants in fields like engineering, finance, medicine, paramedic etc. They are recommended for permanent residence in Australia,” he said. .

How to get ‘Global Talent Visa’?
A person applying for permanent residence through the ‘Global Talent Visa’ program must have made outstanding contributions in any field internationally.
A person who has made a significant international contribution in the fields of sport, arts, research, or education can apply for permanent residency in Australia through the ‘Global Talent Visa’ program.
There is no age limit to apply through the ‘Global Talent Visa’ scheme. However, if the applicant is under 18 or over 55, the applicant must have made a significant contribution to the Australian economy or innovative research in any important field.
Additionally, an applicant for permanent residency must demonstrate that they can easily find work in their field without difficulty. Must have English language proficiency.
An immigrant applying under the ‘Global Talent Visa’ scheme or any member of their family must not have a loan from the Australian Government. If there is any debt, the immigrant must repay it before applying for the visa. Also, a person who has been refused a visa in the past cannot apply for permanent residence.
Immigration lawyer Prashant Ajmera says the ‘Global Talent Visa’ allows Australian companies to nominate skilled immigrants for permanent residency to fill senior management positions such as CEO, CFO or CTO.
Australian companies want to attract international talent through this visa. And the processing of this visa is also fast.
Speaking to BBC Gujarati, immigration expert Dr Julie Desai said that due to globalization every country wants to attract internationally skilled people. Amid continuous changes in the international labor market, through this program, Australia also offers permanent residency to global talent from various sectors in its country. However, to get this visa one must have made a significant contribution in the field of sports, arts, research or education internationally, he said.
“In a way, there is no age limit to get a Global Talent Visa. Thus, even expats who have worked in their field for many years and are internationally renowned can apply for this visa,” he said.
