The fifth stage of the Tour de France, leaving Pau on Wednesday July 5, to reach Laruns after 162.7 km covering the first Pyrenean reliefs of the event, allowed the Australian Jai Hindley, 27, to to offer a prestigious success and to take the leader’s tunic for his very first Tour de France. Hindley, winner of the Tour of Italy in 2022, took advantage of the breakaway of the day, from the first kilometers, to race at the front and attacked in the last difficulty of the day, the Col de Marie-Blanque ( 7.7 km at 8.6%, 1st category). Dane Jonas Vingegaard, outgoing winner of the Grande Boucle, took fifth place in the stage after dropping Slovenian Tadej Pogacar before the summit of Marie-Blanque. In the general classification, Jonas Vingegaard is 47 seconds behind the Australian. The Italian Giulio Ciccone completes the podium. David Gaudu, the first French overall, is in 10th place, 1m 56s behind Hindley.
