Melbourne: An Australian player has reached the final of the Australian Open in the women’s singles, ending a four – decade long wait for Australian fans. World number one Ash Barty of Australia has won a historic title and qualified for the title. In the semi-finals, Barty advanced to the final, beating Madison Key of the United States in straight sets. The score was 6-1, 6-3.

Wendy Turnbull was the last Australian to play in the women’s singles final of the Australian Open before Barty in 1980. Barty, a former cricketer, advanced to the semi – finals without even allowing his opponent to fight.

At the Australian Open this season, Barty repeated in the regular semi-finals that he has not conceded more than one set and four games. If Barty wins the French Open in 2019 and Wimbledon in 2021, it will be another history. Barty holds the historic record of becoming the first Australian to win the Australian Open in 43 years.

Chris O’Neill last won the Australian Open in 1978. Barty will face the winner of the second semi – final between Daniela Collins of the United States and Iga Swati.
