The Australian Open tennis tournament which has the highest status of Grand Slam is being held in Melbourne. The first round matches were held in the women’s singles category.

In the women’s singles, No. 2 seed Anne Japier (Tunisia) meets 88th-ranked Tamara Zidanček (Slovenia). Japier won the match 7-6 (10-8), 4-6, 6-1.

Olympic champion Belinda Bencic of Switzerland defeated Victoria Thomova (Bulgaria) in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Similarly, Kontaveit from Estonia also advanced to the next round. Some games were halted yesterday due to rain.
