Professor Seo Kyung-deok “Neglected despite repeated protests”
It was revealed that the War Memorial of Korea in Canberra, Australia, displayed clothing that appears to be a relic from China’s Qing Dynasty along with the Taegeukgi (pictured) and incorrectly introduced it as Korean traditional clothing.
Seo Gyeong-deok, a professor at Sungshin Women’s University, said on social media on the 10th, “The clothes on display are Chinese style, not the traditional Korean style, such as the cutting method of the collar and sleeves, color combination, and embroidery.” He added, “Last year, after receiving reports from Korean residents in Australia, “I sent several protest emails to the memorial, but it has not been corrected,” he pointed out. According to photos released by Professor Seo, the clothes displayed with the Taegeukgi in the background are described as “children’s traditional clothing from the Korean War.”
The Australian War Memorial, which opened in 1941, is treated as one of Australia’s important national memorials by honoring the soldiers of the war in which Australia participated and displaying related items. Australia helped Korea by sending about 17,000 soldiers during the Korean War. Professor Seo emphasized, “The exhibition hall in question is a place with many overseas visitors, so errors should no longer be left unattended,” and “Errors must be corrected as soon as possible.”
