Australians Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell, finalists at the Australian Open in January, won their first Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon on Saturday by beating Croatian defending champions Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic.

Ebden and Purcell won the fifth set super tie-break 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (3/7), 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10/2) after a marathon match of 4:11 and when they had been led 4-2 in the decisive set. They are the first Australian pair to win at Wimbledon since Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in 2000.
