by time news

Australia has faced a major challenge over the past decade. No other country or organization has issued this challenge. Its biggest ‘enemy’ is giving a big challenge. This ‘enemy’ entered Australia about 150 years ago. Then its number was only 24. Its number has gradually increased and today after 150 years it has crossed 200 million. This number is more than the entire population of Australia. These enemies are causing a loss of around Rs.1,600 crore to Australia annually. Now you might be thinking who is doing such harm to this country. It is none other than that. Rabbit. Yes, this innocent looking little animal has added to the problem of this country. Of course you still can’t believe it, but the statistics say so.

1600 crore loss

Today in Australia, European wild rabbits are damaging pastures and crops. Apart from this, the productivity of the land is also decreasing due to this. Apart from this, they also attack and destroy other indigenous wildlife. This invasive species of rabbit threatens about 300 species of plants and animals. Because of this, Australia suffers a loss of about $200 million or about Rs 1600 crore every year in the agricultural sector.

A Christmas present in 1859

The number of these rabbits that damage crops, plants and other animals is more than 200 million. These are becoming a major problem for Australia. These rabbits are not native to Australia. They belong to the category of alien species. The story of this rabbit going to Australia is also interesting. On December 25, 1859, Christmas Day, a special gift arrived for a man on board an English ship that arrived in Melbourne Harbour. A man named Thomas Austin received 24 rabbits as a Christmas gift from England. Originally, Austin in England wanted to raise many rabbits in the compound of his house in Australia, so he intended to import them from England. Some of these 24 rabbits are wild and some are domesticated. These 24 rabbits multiplied into thousands within three years.
