Cameron Smith won the Players Championship, the world’s richest golf tournament. The 28-year-old Australian triumphed at the $20 million event in Ponte Vedra Beach, celebrating the biggest win of his career.

Smith prevailed in Florida on the final day of TPC Sawgrass with a total of 275 shots against Indian Anirban Lahiri (276) and Paul Casey from England (277). For his fifth win on the PGA Tour, Smith received $3.6 million in prize money. After the four majors, the Players Championship is the most important individual competition in golf. The German golf pro Stephan Jäger failed at the cut after two rounds and was eliminated early.

Irishman Shane Lowry already hit the tournament on Sunday. On the famous 17th fairway of the TPC Sawgrass, the 113 meter long par 3 hole with island green, he sank his ball in the third round with just one stroke to ace in the hole. After his hole-in-one, the 2019 British Open champion was wildly celebrated by the fans.

On the first two days of the tournament, heavy rain and thunderstorms in Florida caused numerous interruptions. Due to the delays, the Players Championship could not be played until Monday. (dpa)
