Austria Freezes Federal Fees for 2027 to Deliver 25 Million Euro Relief

Following a massive adjustment wave in 2025, Austria’s federal government has suspended scheduled inflation adjustments for federal fees heading into 2027, delivering a 25 million euro relief package for citizens. Markus Marterbauer orchestrated the fee freeze, shielding daily administrative documents from further price hikes.

Led by Markus Marterbauer, the administrative decision halts the planned upward indexing of standard tariffs and yields a direct financial relief of 25 million euros for碁 the public compared to a full valorization, completely suspending the regular inflation adjustment of federal fees for the year 2027.

In 2025, the administration instituted a steep fee increase tied to standard inflation tracking that pushed rates upward by 48.2 percent. That prior surge drove up baseline expenses across registry and identity documents before officials stepped in to halt further scaling for 2027.

Document Tariffs Frozen After the 2025 Cost Surge

Affected credentials include passports, identity cards, vehicle registration documents, driver licenses, criminal record certificates, and patents.

Data compiled by Statistik Austria for the year 2025 documents that 168,437 driver licenses were issued during that year. The agency registered an average annual volume of 750,000 passports, more than 1.4 million vehicle registration documents, and between 220,000 and 240,000 criminal record certificates.

  • Driver licenses issued: 168,437
  • Passports issued: approximately 750,000 annually
  • Vehicle registration documents: more than 1.4 million annually
  • Criminal record certificates: between 220,000 and 240,000 annually

A passport climbed from 76 euros to 112 euros, while an identity card rose from 62 euros to 91 euros. Driver licenses increased from 61 euros to 90 euros, and vehicle registration papers jumped from 120 euros to 178 euros. Registry office expenses for a marriage ceremony expanded from 50 euros to 74 euros, and the upcoming 2027 freeze prevents these specific administrative costs from climbing any higher.

Transport Tariffs and Vignette Price Increases for 2027

Meanwhile, the nationwide climate ticket for public local and long-distance transport will increase from 1,400 to 1,428 euros.
