Berlin – The Austrian Bundesliga soccer team Austria Wien parted ways with coach Michael Wimmer shortly before the end of the season. The club announced this two days after the 4-0 home defeat against RC Pellets WAC. In addition to the 43-year-old native of Dingolfing, his assistant Ahmet Koc will also be released.
“Based on the developments in the last few games, we came to the conclusion that the team needs new impetus in order to achieve our season goal in the playoffs. Coach dismissals are always difficult, especially with Michi Wimmer because we had a good relationship and his character is absolutely top,” said sports director Jürgen Werner in a club statement. The previous assistant coach Christian Wegleitner will take over the team on an interim basis until the end of the season.
Wimmer, who took over as interim coach at VfB Stuttgart in October 2022, had been head of Austria since January 2023 and then made it into the championship group. This season the Viennese narrowly missed out on the top six, and their poor performances in the qualifying group were the deciding factor in their separation. In nine games, Wimmer only got two wins.
