The EU wants to limit cash payments to 10,000 euros. Austria clearly rejects this and wants to enshrine the right to cash in the constitution. The federal government has no clear position on this.

In Austria, the right to cash is to become part of the constitution. Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) announced this. “More and more people are worried that cash could be restricted as a means of payment in Austria,” he said on Friday. It is therefore important to him: “Cash should be included in the constitution.”

Conflicting information about the cash supply unsettled people, Nehammer said. You have to counter that. “People in Austria have a right to cash.” In order to guarantee this, three steps are necessary: First, constitutional protection of cash as a means of payment. Secondly, it must be ensured that cash payments can continue to be made. Thirdly, the promise of a “basic supply of cash involving the National Bank” is needed.
