There are some unavoidable things in life and these days, seeing Max Verstappen take the top step of the podium at a Formula 1 Grand Prix is one of them. The Dutchman (Red Bull) won logically – and easily – this Sunday in Spielberg, Austria. His seventh victory in nine grands prix this season, the fifth in a row.
The outcome of this race will not really be debated. If the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) offered himself the luxury of leading the race for a while, Verstappen will have quickly distanced him, counting at times nearly 25 seconds ahead of his first pursuer. So much so that he allowed himself … a pit stop two laps from the finish, from which he came out with a still comfortable lead over Leclerc before signing, as a bonus, the fastest lap of the race.
Pérez, from 15th to 3rd place
This second place gives Leclerc a second podium this season, after his third place gleaned in Azerbaijan. Behind the two leading men, their two teammates Pérez (Red Bull) and Sainz (Ferrari) fought a breathtaking battle for third place. This finally goes to the Mexican, who therefore makes a crazy comeback since he started in … 15th position on the starting grid.
A comeback that Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, the two French Alpine pilots, will not have managed to make. Starting 9th and 12th respectively, the two men finished the race… 9th and 12th. A small disappointment for the second, who came out of a podium in Monaco and two 8th places in Spain and Canada and therefore did not score any points in Austria. We will have to make up for it next weekend on the Silverstone circuit in England.
