One of the natural wonders of Styria is the Grüner See, located north of Graz, under the Hochschwab mountain range, which was voted the most beautiful place in Austria. The lake got its name from its special emerald green color, which appears in spots in the otherwise unreal transparent, turquoise water. The water of the lake is almost completely sediment-free, and the fresh undergrowth gives it its beautiful green color. Due to its special features, it is almost like an aquarium in nature: even fish swimming among the plants are perfectly visible from the shore. Its condition is preserved in such a way that, although it used to be a popular spot for divers, bathing in the lake is now prohibited. It’s true, even in summer, in water of only 6-8 degrees, few people would think of this anyway. So hiking remains, for which an easy walking path has been built on the shore so that the lake can be easily bypassed. The irregularly shaped lake, located at an altitude of 775 meters above sea level, can be walked around in one hour.

By the way, the lake bed is a deeper pool that is flooded in spring and early summer by the meltwater coming down from the mountains. The water level is usually at its highest in May-June, when it can reach 10 meters in the deepest part, then it slowly recedes, and finally it comes close to drying up in winter, and then it fills up again in spring. The moving lake thus shows a different face in each season. It is most beautiful when it is decorated in all its splendor and its depth reaches 12 meters. This period lasts from mid-May to the end of June.
