Pictures, some of which have not yet been published, show the history of Salzburg companies.

Eleven Salzburg companies and their history are the focus of a new book that was presented in the Gwandhaus on Wednesday evening. Author Freya Martin brings companies from Salzburg’s old town in front of the curtain, such as the Wieber locksmith’s shop, but also cheesemaker Woerle from Henndorf am Wallersee or crane manufacturer Palfinger from Bergheim, which is the world market leader in its sector. It was no coincidence that a business like today’s Wieber locksmith’s shop, whose roots go back to the beginning of the 15th century, developed: not only salt production, but also gold and silver mining in the Gastein Valley played an important role in Salzburg in the 15th century. and 16th century a major role.

The Vienna-based author Freya Martin published her first book about traditional Viennese companies and their history around ten years ago. “That was very well received, as it is an emotional topic. Because every generation has certain memories associated with long-established businesses,” she says. So she decided to expand her research to the federal states. Books about companies in Carinthia, Styria, Vorarlberg and Upper Austria followed. The prerequisite was that the companies had an exciting history and that there were also enough historical pictures. She was spoiled for choice for “Salzburger Traditionsbetriebe”, her eighth book in the series published by Sutton Verlag, because there is such a large number of suitable traditional companies. But at 180 pages it’s over at some point.

“It’s a book that lives from the pictures,” says Freya Martin. Around 170 historical photos, some of which are unpublished, document the history of companies that are inextricably linked to Salzburg, such as Lanz, Stiegl, Fürst or Knopferlmayer.
