Authorities: Dozens of children died of starvation in Afghanistan

by time news

According to official information, dozens of children have already starved to death in Afghanistan. At least 17 malnourished children have died in hospitals in central Ghor province in the past six months, the provincial health authority director Mullah Mohammad Ahmadi said on Saturday. A total of almost 300 malnourished children were treated there. He claims that hundreds of children are at risk of starvation across central Afghanistan.

A third of the population in Afghanistan is threatened with starvation

A spokesman for the UN Children’s Fund UNICEF could not confirm the figures from Ghor. But he too fears that “many children” could die in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan has been dependent on international aid for years. However, after the withdrawal of Western troops and the radical Islamic Taliban came to power, many services were frozen. Add to this a severe drought and rising food prices.

According to the UN, a third of the population is already threatened with starvation. UNICEF estimates that by the end of the year one million children under the age of five could be so severely malnourished that their lives are in danger.
