Lev Zimanov, Associate Professor of the Department of Motor Transport Operation of MADI, spoke about the existence of two options to prevent the car from “dying” during abnormal cold weather.

In an interview with the News.ru portal on Friday, December 17, the specialist noted that there are two options to save the engine in frost. The first is to store the heat left after stopping the engine, and the second is to warm it up before starting.

He explained that modern cars in calm weather can provide an easy engine start after three to five hours of inactivity, but if more time has passed, then the engine should be warmed up before driving.

Zimanov explained that the battery does not charge well at idle, since the generator does not supply current to it. At idle speed, the battery provides only “the current operation of the car”, so before starting the trip it is better to “make a small circle”, writes the site kp.ru.

If severe frosts are established on the street, then the battery can be saved by taking it into the house. It is also permissible to cover the engine compartment well with something warm.

On December 10, experts of the services “SberServices” and “SberAvto” named the most frequent mistakes of drivers on the winter road. The first common mistake is not keeping the required distance. In addition, it must be remembered that heavy braking can be dangerous even in summer on dry roads, but in winter it can also cause an accident. Sharp maneuvers and rearrangements are also dangerous. Among other things, drivers often neglect the speed limit. The experts reminded that the speed should be reasonable in slippery weather.
