The electric car market is exploding. In June, 15.1% of new cars sold in Europe were electric, surpassing diesels for the first time, according to a press release from the Association of European Manufacturers (ACEA) on Wednesday. Last year, they accounted for only 10.7% of sales, an increase of two thirds.

The electric car is very popular in the Netherlands, Germany and France where sales have increased by 52% over one year. Figures which are explained in particular by the fall in prices of Tesla. One in five electric cars sold in Europe comes from the American manufacturer.

The hybrid car is also doing very well since it represented nearly a quarter of new registrations in June. On the other hand, rechargeable hybrids, which can be plugged into a socket, are experiencing a decline on the Old Continent despite success in France where sales have increased by half.

Petrol cars still largely in the lead

According to the ACEA, the gasoline car remains dominant on the European market where it represents 36.3% of sales, against 38.5% last year. Diesel continues to decline even if in Germany and Central Europe, sales seem to be growing.

Overall the car market is doing better. After complicated Covid years due to shortages of electronic components, the market is progressing without however reaching the record levels of 2019. It is growing by 17.8% over one year to reach one million registrations. In France, there are 11.5% of new cars sold in June 2023 than in June 2022.

The Volkswagen group remains the biggest seller in Europe with more than a quarter of vehicles sold ahead of the French Stellantis and Renault, which complete the podium.
