On February 23, the final speeches of the defendants in the case of the head of the “Khural TV” Internet resource Avaz Zeynalli and the head of the “Sada” TV YouTube channel Elnur Shukurov began at the Baku Court of Serious Crimes.
Elnur Shukurov said that the accusations brought against him are groundless and asked the court to acquit him. Then Zeynalli gave his last words and said that the case was falsified and the accusation was groundless.
Zeynalli’s speech will continue on February 26.
It should be recalled that before that, the prosecutor asked the court to convict Zeynalli under articles 311 (taking a bribe) and 312-1.1 (illegal influence on the decision of an official) of the Criminal Code and sentence him to 10 years in prison.
The prosecutor requested that Shukurov be sentenced to five years in prison under Article 312-1.1 of the Criminal Code.
* On September 10 last year, Avaz Zeynalli and lawyer Elchin Sadigov were detained on suspicion of accepting bribes, and on September 11, the court arrested both of them.
According to the investigation, through the mediation of Sadigov, Zeynalli received money from the family of imprisoned entrepreneur Rasim Mammadov so that he would not publish defamatory information about him.
On September 17, the Baku Court of Appeal released Sadigov under house arrest and took his case into separate proceedings.
Later, a new charge was brought against Avaz Zeynalli under Article 312-1.1 of the Criminal Code (illegal influence on the decision of an official (influence trading). Elnur Shukurov was also arrested on the same charge.
