Captain Ross “Rusty” Aimer, a retired United Airlines pilot and the CEO of Aero Consulting Experts, provides insights into the Air India crash survivor’s escape, suggesting that the seat location played a crucial role in his survival.
Last week, an Air India flight tragically crashed shortly after takeoff, resulting in over 200 fatalities, but one passenger was seen walking away from the explosion, remarkably unharmed.
Capt. Rusty explains that while there’s no universally “safest” seat on a plane, being near an emergency exit door significantly boosts the chances of survival in a crash.
The expert highlights that being near an emergency exit, like Viswash Kumar Ramesh’s seat 11A, can provide a crucial advantage in a crash, potentially saving seconds that determine life or death.
In Ramesh’s case, the videos show a significant amount of fuel, but he was seemingly protected from the inferno because he was seated in front of the wing-located fuel tanks.
Despite these insights, the retired pilot emphasizes that no seat guarantees safety. He humorously points out that pilots are usually the first on the scene after a crash, but the safety of any seat relies on the specifics of each incident.
Captain Rusty notes that while sole-survivor plane crashes aren’t unheard of, this particular incident has even him, a non-believer in miracles, pondering the possibility.
