She only used it for eight short months. The Norman airline Chalair announced on Tuesday that it was suspending the Brest-Orly connection due to insufficient attendance and “the stated desire of certain local institutions to favor another solution”, while another company took a position and obtained financial support from several communities.

“The Chalair company has taken the decision to suspend operation of the route between Brest and Orly from November 11, 2023,” it said in a press release. “Despite exemplary regularity, with more than 98% of scheduled flights completed, the insufficient level of attendance on the line since its resumption, and the stated desire of certain local institutions to favor another solution, are the main motivations for this decision” , specifies Chalair.

Chalair took over this line in November 2022, previously operated by Transavia and mainly targeting business customers. The first flight took place in March. The resumption of connections from Brest to Orly can now “be considered as soon as the general economic conditions and the local support policy are met”, according to the press release.

“Practices from another time”

A new airline, Céleste, based in Morlaix (Finistère), positioned itself a few months ago to ensure the Brest-Paris connection, with the financial support of several local authorities, the agglomeration community of Morlaix, the region Brittany and Brest metropolis via repayable advances totaling 3.5 million euros.

Brittany’s support is part of the support provided to the economic development of Breton companies, she explained during the vote on this advance in June. “It is not up to the community and taxpayers to pay for those who want to maintain practices from another time”, in a context of the fight against greenhouse gas emissions and global warming, denounced in a press release published Tuesday by the elected environmentalists of the Brittany regional council.

According to the calculator of the Ecological Transition Agency (Ademe), a Brest-Paris journey emits 1.5 kg of CO2 per person by TGV, compared to 116 kg of CO2 by short-haul plane.
