Avishag Samberg missed a medal at the World Championships. The taekwondo fighter finished in fifth place in the competition in Guadalajara, Mexico, which took place tonight (Thursday), after losing in the quarter-final match against the local Mexican Souza Daniela.

Samberg opened the day of competition in the second round of the World Championship in the weight category up to 49 kg and defeated Patimat Akarova from Azerbaijan in two sets. After that, an opponent from Brazil won in the round of 16 in two sets.

In the quarter-final battle, she appeared against Souza Daniela, ranked third in the world, and impressed with a lead and victory in the first set, but in the next two sets, each draw decided the victory of the Mexican. The third round ended in a 7:7 tie and was decided by the amount of positive scoring in the round, when Avisheg had two points due to punishing the opponent while the Mexican only had one.

Samberg, the Olympic bronze medalist from Tokyo 2020, was the delegation’s best hope to finish with a medal at the current World Taekwondo Championships, but she failed to reach the podium. Nimrod Karbitsky also lost early on and was eliminated.
