The AvtoVAZ auto concern plans to launch the production of cars, in particular new Lada models, at the former Nissan plant in St. Petersburg in the second quarter of 2023, reported company press office.

“Together with partners from friendly countries, AvtoVAZ is preparing to start car production at the former Nissan plant in St. Petersburg in the second quarter of this year. The company intends to produce several new models under the LADA brand in the sought-after C and D segments,” the message says.

A day earlier, at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Governor of the Samara Region Dmitry Azarov said that “AvtoVAZ» plans to produce at least 400,000 vehicles and car kits in 2023. But at the meeting, Azarov spoke about a noticeable decrease in the performance of the automaker in 2022. So, last year, “AvtoVAZ”produced 220,000 car kits against 431,000 in 2021. According to Azarov, AvtoVAZ is recruiting additional employees.

February 7thAvtoVAZclosed the deal to buy the former Nissan plant in St. Petersburg. Then the general director of AvtoVAZ, Maxim Sokolov, confirmed the plans to launch the production of Lada cars at this plant. According to him, the assembly will begin in the second half of this year. The production volume in 2023 will be up to 10,000 vehicles, in the future it can be increased. By 2024-2027 it is planned to localize the production of cars.

On October 11, 2022, the Ministry of Industry and Trade announced the transfer of 100% of Nissan’s assets in Russia “Nissan Manufacturing Rus”, including a plant in St. Petersburg, subordinated to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Scientific Research Automobile and Automotive Institute (NAMI). It was clarified that AvtoVAZ would deal with the after-sales service of cars and the supply of spare parts. At the end of November, the plant became the property of NAMI.
