The Regional Equality Committee of the Region of Epirus expects general directions and instructions from the General Secretariat for Equality and Human Rights for the Regional Action Plan of the Regional Committee for Gender Equality (P.E.P.IS) and for the operation of the Independent Equality Office.
The absence of the submission of the annual report of the Independent Equality Office for 2023, which concerns the evaluation of the policies and actions of the Region to eliminate discrimination and promote equality, was detected by the regional group “People of Epirot”, which submitted a question about with the Regional Action Plan Regional Committee for Gender Equality (P.EP.IS) and Independent Equality Office.
The regional councilor Panagiota Angeli was the one who introduced the matter, asking the regional authority whether, in accordance with the law, an action plan for gender equality, taking into account local specificities, has been drawn up, and whether the Regional Equality Committee has recommended to the competent authorities institutions proposals for taking necessary measures. He also requested information on the annual report from the Independent Equality Office on the policies and actions of the Epirus Region, as well as whether data has been collected and processed regarding the integration of gender equality in the policies, actions and programs of the Region .
“We believe that information and training within a working environment becomes more accessible for everyone, as it prevents the social targeting of genders, Art as an experiential action can effortlessly awaken, change human attitudes, while at the same time more effectively attracting young people (group – objective) and it is necessary to effectively link the competent services of all bodies at the local level (Region, Municipalities) in order to record the existing situation and define the goals for its improvement”, noted Ms. Angeli, referring to proposals from other Regions , such as Attica and Crete.
The work of the Regional Equality Committee was defended by the president of PEPIS Panagiota Mitrokosta, noting on the one hand that instructions and directions regarding the operation of the Autonomous Office are expected and on the other hand that an effort is being made so that the Region is not burdened financially.
“P.EPI.S has been producing work from the beginning. And of course we will continue just as strongly,” she noted, referring to the contacts with the municipalities and other agencies, as well as the establishment of the Autonomous Office from 2022.” Therefore, the instructions and directions from the competent General Secretariat are limited, given that the completion of the procedures is expected from all the Regions in order to define in more detail the framework and their mode of operation. We are working”, he noted and referred to the actions that have been implemented to date.
“We hope for excellent cooperation in raising awareness and for the presence of all of you in the next actions of the Equality Committee, but we will also invite you all to an enlarged meeting of the Committee, where we would gladly like to hear our proposals on the matters of its competence, with aimed at highlighting the issues and the contribution of all of us to limiting or eliminating the social problems caused by gender inequalities”, he concluded.
