Aaron Sorkin Developing “The Social Network” Sequel Focused on “Facebook Files” Revelations

A new drama, not a traditional sequel, is in the works, potentially starring Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White, to explore the fallout from Facebook’s internal documents.

Fifteen years after the release of the critically acclaimed “The Social Network,” screenwriter and director Aaron Sorkin is reportedly developing a follow-up that shifts focus from the platform’s origins to the controversies surrounding the “Facebook Files.” The project, currently in the early stages of development with Sony Pictures, aims to dissect the impact of the social network on society and the ethical responsibilities of tech giants.

According to reports from Deadline, Sorkin is eyeing Mikey Madison, the recent Oscar winner for her performance in “Anora,” to portray Frances Haugen, the whistleblower who ignited a global debate with her disclosures about Facebook’s internal research. Simultaneously, Jeremy Allen White, an Emmy Award-winning actor known for his role in “The Bear,” is being considered to play Jeff Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter who spearheaded the publication of the “Facebook Files.” Sony Pictures has not yet officially commented on the potential casting.

This new film isn’t intended as a direct continuation of the 2010 film, but rather as an independent drama thematically linked to the revelations of recent years. While the original “The Social Network” chronicled the birth of Facebook and the conflicts between its founders, this project will delve into the platform’s broader influence and the consequences of its actions. The courage of investigative journalism, exemplified by the work of Horwitz and others, will be a central theme, drawing parallels to films like “Spotlight” and “The Insider.”

The role of Mark Zuckerberg, memorably portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg in the first film, remains uncertain. However, sources suggest he could appear in a supporting capacity, as the narrative prioritizes new characters and perspectives.

Madison and White’s potential involvement has already generated significant buzz. Both actors have established themselves as rising stars through award-winning performances. Madison’s credits include “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Scream,” while White is currently preparing to portray Bruce Springsteen in the upcoming biopic, “Deliver Me From Nowhere.”

Sorkin, who will both write and direct the project, has articulated ambitious goals for the film. He intends to not only expose the darker aspects of Facebook but also to provoke a broader conversation about the social accountability of technology companies. Fans of the original film can anticipate a compelling exploration of these complex issues, continuing the legacy of a groundbreaking story.

Additionally, Jeremy Allen White is reportedly in talks to star in a Netflix series adaptation of a bisexual romance drama, showcasing the actor’s diverse range.
