Awarded the first phase of the access branches to the new container terminal of the Port of Cdiz

(18/12/2023)

These works will connect the new container terminal with the General Interest Railway Network. The works are complemented by the Astilleros Avenue crossing project, in charge of execution by Adif, which consists of a 111-meter stretch of track between a detour before the Cádiz Station and the enclosing fence of the port

The execution of this first phase has a main branch of 1.78 kilometers and a maneuver branch of 615 meters, and will be financed with 6.73 million euros from the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism fund of the Next Generation EU Funds.

After this initial stage, in a second phase, which will be carried out between 2025 and 2026, the two branches will be extended to reach 2.06 and 0.89 kilometers respectively. In this way, the terminal will have the capacity to serve railway convoys of up to 750 meters in length. These works are included in the priority of Trans-European Network Projects (“TEN-T Comprehensive Network”).

Currently, container traffic is managed at the Reina Sofia dock terminal, which lacks rail connectivity. For this reason, the Port Authority of the Bay of Cádiz promoted the construction of a new container terminal, with a total area of 38 hectares, with the idea of executing it in two stages. The exploitation of phase 1.1 and 1.2. It was awarded to the Gaditana Container Company in December 2017 and June 2022 respectively.
