It is very important to raise awareness about the harmful effects of fake cosmetics, medicines and other counterfeit products including cigarette products. The public should be made aware through media and social media campaigns. Anti-counterfeiting must go to its source. Such illegal activities can be stopped by going to the source and stopping it.

Speakers said this at a seminar on ‘prevention and elimination of fake products’ in Sylhet city on Sunday. Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized the seminar.

Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Tahmin Ahmed was the chief guest at the event, Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Abu Ahmed Siddiqui NDC. National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate Sylhet Divisional Deputy Director Md. Fakhrul Islam, BAT Bangladesh Head of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs Sabab Ahmad Chowdhury and others.

Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet Abu Ahmad Siddique said, “In the developed countries of the world, the production and sale of fake products is a crime, as well as the purchase and use of fake products is considered a crime. But buying and using fake products is not considered a crime in Bangladesh. As a result, the market has been flooded with fake products of various famous brands at low prices. To get rid of this situation, the government officials of the concerned departments and the responsible people of the society should play a strong role in creating public awareness from their respective positions.

Deputy Director of Sylhet Department of National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate. Fakhrul Islam said, ‘Alluring discounts contain adulteration. This should be kept in mind. Moreover, another thing is that no one is interested in buying the brand products of our country. While buying foreign products, most of the times one has to be cheated by buying fake products. We have to stop chasing low-priced products.’

On the occasion, BAT Bangladesh Head of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs Sabab Ahmed Chowdhury said, ‘Counterfeit products have spread like an epidemic. It will not be enough to conduct raids on market shops only. Go to the source. If counterfeiting is really to be stopped, work must be done at the source. Only then can the intensity of counterfeiting be reduced.
