R Pragyananda Rameshbabu from Tamil Nadu also won the title of Young Grandmaster of India in the Norwegian Chess Group A Open Chess Tournament held in Norway.

Pragyananda, who played 9 rounds, came back as the winner with 7.5 points. In 9 rounds Pragyananda was the undisputed winner by any player. In the final round on Friday, Pragyananda defeated another Indian, V. Praneeth, to win the title.

Pragyananda topped the list with 7.5 points, followed by Israel’s IM Marcel Bromsky and Sweden’s Jung Min Cio with 3 points. Indian batsman Praneeth finished 6th with 6 points but did not score in the tiebreaker and moved up to 6th.

Apart from Praneeth, Pragyananda defeated Victor Mikhalovsky in the 8th round, Vitaly Kukin in the 6th round, Mohammad Jokit Suyarao in the 4th round, Simen Mutsov in the 2nd round and Matthias Unneland in the first round. Pragyananda drew 3 matches.

The Pragyananda game has been fantastic lately. Pragyananda recently defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen on Chessable Master Online. In the final, he fell to Chinese player Ding Lir.
Pragyananda is set to play for India B in the 44th Chess Olympiad to be held in Chennai next month.
