AWS Expands Language Recognition and AI Capabilities with Amazon Transcribe

During the recent AWS re: Invent event, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the addition of new languages to its Amazon Transcribe product, a move that offers generative AI-based transcription for 100 languages and a plethora of new AI capabilities for its customers.

Amazon Transcribe, a tool used by AWS customers to add speech-to-text capabilities to their apps on the AWS Cloud, can now recognize more spoken languages and spin up a call transcription. According to a blog post by the company, Transcribe has been trained on “millions of hours of unlabeled audio data from over 100 languages” and uses self-supervised algorithms to learn patterns of human speech in different languages and accents.

The expansion of language recognition in Amazon Transcribe is a significant achievement for AWS, as the company has ensured that some languages were not over-represented in the training data to ensure that lesser-used languages could be as accurate as more frequently spoken ones. In late 2022, Amazon Transcribe supported 79 languages, but with the latest update, the tool now offers speech recognition capabilities for 100 languages.

Amazon Transcribe, which boasts 20 percent to 50 percent accuracy across many languages, also offers automatic punctuation, custom vocabulary, automatic language identification, and custom vocabulary filters. It can recognize speech in audio and video formats and noisy environments.

The advancements with Amazon Transcribe also extend to better accuracy with AWS’s Call Analytics platform, which its contact center customers often use. With the addition of generative AI models, Amazon Transcribe Call Analytics can now summarize interactions between an agent and a customer, reducing the need for after-call work creating reports. Managers can quickly read information without needing to go through the entire transcript.

While AWS is not the only company offering AI-powered transcription services, its expansion of language recognition and AI capabilities with Amazon Transcribe further solidifies its position as a leader in the industry.

In addition to the expansion of Amazon Transcribe, AWS also announced additional capabilities to its Amazon Personalization product, further emphasizing its commitment to providing cutting-edge AI solutions to its customers.
