AYANEO’s “Pocket Play” Aims to Revive Sliding Gamepad Smartphone Concept

A new smartphone from AYANEO, dubbed the “Pocket Play,” is poised to resurrect the once-popular sliding gamepad design pioneered by Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play, bringing dedicated physical controls to the modern Android ecosystem. The device, detailed in a recent company release, blends full smartphone functionality with a built-in gamepad, targeting both contemporary mobile games and retro titles.

A Nostalgic Nod to the Xperia Play

The announcement has sparked memories of the 2011 Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, a device that attempted to bridge the gap between mobile phones and handheld gaming consoles. As one observer noted, “It’s been 15 years since we first encountered the Xperia Play, and it’s fascinating to see AYANEO attempting to recapture that magic.” AYANEO is leaning into this nostalgia, positioning the Pocket Play as a modern evolution of that earlier concept.

Design and Control Scheme

The AYANEO Pocket Play features a sliding mechanism that reveals an integrated gamepad when opened. This eliminates the need for external accessories, offering a seamless gaming experience. The gamepad boasts physical buttons and two tactile trackpads designed to emulate the functionality of analog joysticks – including L3 and R3 capabilities – with the ability to switch between virtual joystick and touch panel modes.

According to the company, the device also includes digital triggers, top buttons, and quick access buttons. While thicker than traditional smartphones, the design maintains a pocketable form factor suitable for everyday carry. The rear of the phone houses a dual-camera module, while the front features a flat, notch-less screen with an integrated fingerprint reader on the power button, optimized for horizontal use.

Powerful Specs Under the Hood

AYANEO has confirmed key specifications for the Pocket Play. The device will sport a 6.8-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels, a 20:9 aspect ratio, and a variable refresh rate up to 165Hz, with support for 120Hz and 144Hz modes to balance performance and power consumption.

Powering the Pocket Play is a MediaTek Dimensity 9300 processor, paired with active cooling, LPDDR5 memory, and UFS 4.0 storage. While the exact RAM and storage configurations remain undisclosed, the device will pack a 5,000 mAh battery with fast charging capabilities. The operating system will be Android 15, enhanced by AYANEO’s proprietary software suite.

Software Ecosystem for Gamers

AYANEO is developing a dedicated software ecosystem for the Pocket Play, including apps like AYASpace, AYAHome, and AYASetting. These tools are designed to streamline game management, control customization, and performance optimization. “The software is crucial for delivering a cohesive gaming experience,” a senior official stated.

Kickstarter Launch Imminent

AYANEO has confirmed that the Pocket Play will launch soon on Kickstarter. However, details regarding pricing, availability, and specific model variants are still pending. The company is building anticipation for the crowdfunding campaign, promising further updates in the coming weeks.
