Berlin Tasting, Blind Event Reassessing Chilean Wines
Ayoung FBC announced on the 30th that it will be releasing a special Chilean wine in Korea to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the ‘Berlin Tasting’, a wine blind evaluation event that began in 2004. The Berlin Tasting is considered an event that changed the perception of Chilean wine, which was undervalued until the early 2000s.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Tasting, the wine selected by Ayoung FBC is the ‘Don Maximiano 2021 Vintage’ from the Chilean winery Errazuriz. The domestic sales price is around 100,000 won. Don Maximiano is considered Errazuriz’s representative wine. In particular, Don Maximiano is well known as ‘First Class Wine’ as it is the wine provided to Korean Air’s first class passengers.
As part of its efforts to improve passenger service in 2022, Korean Air collaborated with Marc Almert, the World’s Best Sommelier champion, to revamp its in-flight wine lineup. At the time, Marc Almert selected wine for each seat in a blind tasting, and Chile’s Don Maximiano Errazuriz was selected as the wine to be served to first-class passengers. Following the Berlin tasting, the excellent quality and luxurious flavor of Chilean wines were once again recognized. Don Maximiano wine is said to still be supplied as Korean Air’s first-class wine.
The Don Maximiano wine presented by Ayoung FBC this time is a 2021 vintage product. It is the brand’s latest vintage product and was also selected as the event wine at the official 20th anniversary event of Berlin Tasting held this year.
Don Maximiano 2021 Vintage Aged for 22 months in French oak. It is said to be characterized by intense purple color and soft aromas of caramel and vanilla. Ayoung FBC explained that you can also experience the harmonious aromas of various varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Carménère. It is said that with one sip, you can feel blueberries, bitter chocolate, black cherries, tobacco aromas, rosemary, and a hint of licorice aromas. The 2021 vintage product was also well-received by wine experts. World-renowned wine critic James Suckling gave it 97 points, the highest score among Don Maximiano products, and a South American wine media outlet evaluated it with 98 points.
Errazuriz, which produces Don Maximiano, is a brand that began in 1870 when Don Maximiano Errazuriz cultivated vineyards in the Aconcagua Valley in north-central Chile. The family tradition of producing wine continues for five generations, and is leading the way in the advancement of Chilean wine. It is a family with a long history, but it is also known as a family that exerts influence in various fields such as politics, economy, society, and diplomacy. It is also called the “Canadian family of Chile”, having produced four Chilean presidents. It is a brand that ranks among the top ten wine companies in Chile as a whole.
