Azerbaijan is working with the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on the issue creation of free “green” economic zones.

As Day.Az reported on Monday, the co-chairman of the global initiative group on the agenda said this COP29 Elmar Mamedov at the international conference within the framework of Climate Action Week in Baku.

“We would like to propose creating free “green” economic zones on the basis of “green” energy zones or renewable energy zones that exist in the world. This is like a merger of a “green” energy zone and a free economic zone. We are now working on this issue jointly with the UN Conference on Trade and Development,” Mamedov said.

According to him, on the sidelines of the COP29 conference it is planned to launch several regional initiatives, in particular to organize the Forum of Climate Resilient Cities within the framework of the UN Special Program for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA).

“On this issue, we are cooperating with the UN Economic Commission for Europe, ESCAP, as well as with multilateral development banks. Together with the EBRD and other partners, we are organizing the Green Cities event for SPECA countries within the framework of COP29, as well as other regional initiatives in cooperation with the Organization Turkic states in the field of partnership for urban development,” added Mamedov.
