With the victory of Azerbaijan in the 44-day Patriotic War, the atmosphere of unity in the Turkic world was strengthened, which was reflected in the decision of the Organization of Turkic States (OTG) to grant the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) the status of an observer country.
As reported by Day.Az with reference to AZERTAC, this idea was expressed by the chairman of the Turkey-TRNC inter-parliamentary friendship group Orhan Erdem during a round table held at the Ankara Institute for Strategic Thinking (SDE), dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Turkish Armed Forces operation to restore peace in Cyprus.
Erdem highly appreciated the decision of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan to form a working group on interparliamentary relations with the TRNC, and noted the importance of dialogue within the framework of the UTG.
“Lefkosa was recognized for the first time as an observer under the name reflected in the TRNC constitution. This is very important,” the Turkish parliamentarian stated.
The head of the inter-parliamentary friendship group stressed that regardless of the level of recognition of Lefkosa, the TRNC’s position will only strengthen. “As long as Turkey is strong and our country supports Lefkosa, this power will remain. I hope for quick steps in the issue of recognizing the TRNC,” Erdem said.
The TRNC Ambassador to Ankara, Ismet Korukoglu, also agreed with the position of the Turkish parliamentarian.
“The TRNC is a modern state with developed institutions. We consider it important to promote our country’s interests in the world, after which recognition will follow. Lefkosa has developed a corresponding Roadmap,” the diplomat said.
