This Tuesday, Aznar, during the inauguration of the FAES 2023 campus, gave a critical speech about the current political panorama. The former president of the Government, José María Aznar, has begun by warning that we are living in “dramatic times” because there is “a certain existential risk for the continuity of Spain as a nation” and has warned that what is underway is “a dismantling of the Constitution”.

After a few words in tribute to Josep Piqué “a friend, FAES patron” who recently passed away, he wanted to remember that before “those were times when ministers traveled to Brussels to defend our interests and so that fugitives from justice could be tried” and that now “the Vice President of the Government travels to Brussels to negotiate with a fugitive from the Government of Spain.”

“The most destructive thing we have ever seen”

José María Aznar considers that the pacts and concessions of the PSOE to the independence movement in recent times constitute an imminent risk for Spain, “it is the most destructive thing we have witnessed”, which is undoubtedly an “attack on the Constitution “, and all to “stay in power.”

Aznar has insisted that the current negotiations illuminate “a project of national deconstruction” that will also entail a “national dissolution”, and that breaks with a law common to all. The former president believes that Spanish society “accumulates civic energy, institutionality and critical mass” to prevent this project from being consumed. “I need to activate these energies, we have to stand up.” He likewise appeals to the “strength” of Spanish citizenship, which he claims is not “the first time it has been put to the test” in past moments in history such as “terrorism.” For this reason, he emphasizes that “we must say again, Enough is enough! Spain cannot return, nor will it return to a sectarian system or the destruction of the nation.” During the speech, Aznar refers to the amnesty as an excuse that “in addition to granting impunity, makes legitimate a very serious seditious attempt against constitutional integrity.”

Furthermore, the former popular president questions and points out “the normality” with which it is assumed that the governance of Spain is in the hands of a fugitive from justice like Carles Puigdemont, “there is no state that does not embarrass its citizens in which a letter of nature is granted to a fugitive from Justice (…) there is nothing more perverse than this false normality with which they want to pass a process of constitutional self-destruction.” Aznar thus places himself at the forefront of the party’s hardest line: “the danger does not come from outside. It is induced by a political force, which is the PSOE, which has become the trigger of a syndrome in which those who have to defend the Constitution from the Government have become its main attackers”.

The Government accuses him of engaging in “coup” behavior

José María Aznar calls for a mobilization against the amnesty, like the one that took place against ETA in his day. The Government did not like those words from Aznar. They accuse him of engaging in “coup” behavior.

They believe that he is calling for a national rebellion and consider that it is not a simple loose verse within the PP.
