In utero exposure to SARS-CoV-2 caused an inflammatory cascade in infants, increasing the risk of respiratory distress, especially in full-term infants.

A proteomic study revealed dysfunctional motile cilia structures and increased immunoglobulin E production in exposed infants with respiratory distress. Of 221 mothers, 68% were not vaccinated before infection, and severe or critical COVID-19 was present in 16% of them. Vaccination significantly reduced the risk of respiratory distress in infants.

The research emphasizes the potential benefits of maternal vaccination in reducing the risk of respiratory distress among newborns exposed to COVID-19.

The study had some limitations including bias in patient selection and lack of data on the timing of infection and vaccination in relation to pregnancy.

The study was published in the journal Nature Communications.
