VIENNA. With an open letter, SPÖ leader Andreas Babler appeals to all those who are alienated from politics and do not want to take part in the upcoming national elections. He apologizes for the “political game” in which his party has “lost itself” and promises to be a “strong voice” for those who have been disappointed in recent years.
Issues addressed by Babler in his open letter range from inadequate childcare to rising rents and low pensions. Babler says: “We are aware of the problems and will fix them. Give us a chance, I promise you we will make the most of it.”
In his post on social media channels, the federal party leader also hints at where the SPÖ government can take us: “There has been very little investment in the health sector for many years. Companies say ‘whatever it takes’. We urgently need money for affordable housing and education for our children. But the government refuses to tax the billionaires, even though the five richest families own more than half of all Austrians.
Babler: “These are conditions like a monarchy”
A few days ago – at the time of the latest World Wealth Report published by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) – Babler reiterated his call for a tax on millionaires: “400 super rich people represent more than a third of the total . money in Austria and thus as much as the sum of 7.2 million people in Austria If one has the money, that is a monarchy.”
