Little James McCallum from Florida was born with a different condition that causes a dark patch of skin and hair – CMN (congenital melanocytic nevus). Despite the appearance of the baby’s skin, according to the Daily Mailit was not a cancerous lesion and, more relieved by the medical explanations, his parents affectionately nicknamed him “little ninja turtle”.

According to a Facebook post by James’ mother Kaitlyn last April, the condition is rare and should be monitored. To the British tabloid, the mother of the boy, who is now 18 months old, said that the condition was only noticed at the birth of her son, not being detected in previous ultrasounds.

She also reported that there was a rapid growth of the lesion, which came to cover about 75% of the child’s back. However, magnetic resonance imaging confirmed that there was no mass growth inside.

Because there is a risk of developing melanoma, a type of skin cancer that is considered the most aggressive because of the possibility of spreading to nearby tissues and organs, parents talked to pediatric dermatologists and plastic surgeons. With the conversations, they opted for tissue removal.

At five and a half months, the first surgery was performed, in which the doctors removed a large part of the extra skin in the neck region, increasing its mobility, and enabling the baby to lie down with his back to the mattress – something that, according to Kaitlyn , James hadn’t done since he was eight weeks old.

After three months, he underwent another surgery to remove the remaining skin from the lesion.

Currently, James has been receiving skin expanders, helping to expand his tissue and prevent the nevus from returning. The procedure involves placing two balloon-like structures on your back and injecting fluid weekly to help normal skin regrow.

Now, the parents are hoping that his condition will be completely cured in time for the boy’s second birthday, which falls in August.
