Four little lions and four young elephants: Leipzig Zoo is happy to have plenty of offspring. On the night of Saturday, the long-awaited fourth baby in the Asian elephants was born there within a year, after a gestation period of around 680 days. “We are glad that the birth has finally taken place,” commented zoo director Jörg Junhold on the recent surprise, according to the announcement. After a “very long gestation period”, the 14-year-old cow Rani gave birth to a still nameless young animal “without any complications”. It is “a very big daughter”.

According to the information, the little one makes “a good impression”, has already been drinking and follows her mother, who makes sure that she stays close. “It’s such a great picture, you can’t make it up,” enthused Division Manager Thomas Günther, who has been working with elephants for decades. The father of the young pachyderm quartet with different mothers is 20-year-old Voi Nam.

The three mini fans born in autumn 2022 are developing “fantastic, are constantly together, play and interact with each other,” says Junhold. “It’s like in the textbook.” Zaya, the youngest so far, is just beginning to eat solid food in addition to milk. The two older ones are already nibbling on grass and hay and are given roughage, apples, nuts and sometimes lettuce. “Young animals are still taking mother’s milk for 1.5 to two years.”

The four lion cubs are now three weeks old. About a week ago, the zoo published photos from the “Lion’s Den”; including on Instagram and on his website. You can see how the fluffy-looking mini lions nestle against mother Kigali or snuggle up to each other. The zoo summarized a “relaxed time between mother and young in the whelping box”. The gender of the offspring has not yet been determined.
