A four-month-old baby was hospitalized in serious condition in Italy after drinking white wine from a bottle. According to the local press, the child’s grandmother mistook the alcoholic beverage for water when preparing her grandson’s bottle of powdered milk.
The baby was admitted to the hospital with an alcoholic coma and has remained hospitalized since last Monday (29). The Italian portal ‘Fanpage.it’ states that the child’s health improved and was extubated this Thursday (02).
The accident happened in the province of Brindisi, Italy. The family claims the child drank the wine but refused to continue drinking. The mother was the one who realized the mistake made by her grandmother and, soon after, sought medical attention.
The Brindisi Prosecutor’s Office was informed of the episode and is investigating the exact dynamics of what happened.
Experts say that children cannot consume alcoholic beverages because the effects can interfere with brain development, create dependence and also harm the development of the body’s organs and systems.
In Brazil, according to the Child and Adolescent Statute (ECA), and Decree No. 6,117/2007, the sale of alcoholic beverages to minors under 18 is prohibited.
